2-503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment (TF Rock) was traveling down Pech River Road shortly after meeting with Watapur District Governor, Zalmay, when the TF Rock Battalion Commander, LTC Ostlund, decided to redirect the convoy to the communities of Chagan, Doshakheyl, and Qazan. Once the convoy pulled over on the road the Afghan National Army Soldiers and 2-503rd Paratroopers waved the children over and shortly there were 30-40 excited children that served as a very captive audience. Several local Afghan vehicles on the road also stopped and their children joined the impromptu event as well. Several teen-aged and young adult men were also watching with smiles. To everyone’s surprise Manogai District Governor, Rahman, happened to be driving down the road at the same time and stopped to join the festivities. He then proceeded to talk to the children, encouraging them to stay in school and stressing the importance of education. Governor Rahman also told the children to be very careful with the new road – do not play near the road and ALWAYS look both ways before crossing the street.
