Militants killed, operations disrupted in Paktia, Helmand provinces

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (May 6, 2008) – Several militants were killed and one detained during two separate Coalition forces’ operations to disrupt anti-government militant operations in Paktia and Helmand provinces, June 5.
Coalition forces searched compounds in Garmser District, Helmand province, targeting a militant network that has facilitated foreign fighter attacks against Afghan government and Coalition forces.
Coalition forces were engaged by several groups of militants during their search. Coalition forces responded with small-arms fire, mortars and air strikes, killing the militants.
Coalition forces found and destroyed a rocket in an improvised launch position.
In a separate operation, Coalition forces searched several compounds in Zormat District, Paktia province, targeting a Taliban militant who has facilitated foreign fighter attacks against Afghan government and Coalition forces.
An associate of the targeted militant was detained during the operation.
