BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Coalition forces medics treated three Afghan children and one adult following a wolf attack in the Shinkay District, Zabul Province, Jan. 13.The four Afghans from the village of Babu drove 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) on a tractor to receive medical attention at a local Coalition clinic. “We feel secure enough to come to the clinic for help after receiving medical and humanitarian assistance from Afghan National Security Forces,” said a member of the victims’ family. The medics treated the victims, which included an 11-year-old girl with multiple lacerations to the face and body and puncture wounds on her arms and shoulder; a 13-year-old boy with multiple lacerations on his arms, head and legs, and a severe bite to the right leg; an 8-year-old boy with severe swelling of the eye and multiple lacerations and punctures to the face, hands and left leg; and a 55-year-old man with multiple minor lacerations and punctures to the right leg and cheek.Based on the patients’ and family members’ story of a “crazy wolf” attack, the medic administered rabies shots to all of the patients. The patients are in stable condition. The younger children were taken home the following day, while the 13-year-old boy and father were evacuated to Kandahar for further treatment.“The actions of these men may have saved the lives of four Afghan citizens because of the relationships established with the local populace last week,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force-82 spokesman. “The ANSF and Coalition set the stage of trust so the villagers felt safe enough to seek help from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.”“Prior to a medical and humanitarian operation, the villagers were undecided in terms of supporting the insurgency or the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,” Belcher said. “That operation, combined with the medical care given to the four Afghans from the same village, has prompted the village elders to enter dialogues to fully support the government.”
