BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – The Afghan National Police have increased security efforts in Oruzgan Province to decrease the number of insurgent support areas recently.
Afghan National Security Forces, assisted by Coalition forces, have driven out insurgents during multiple operations during the last few weeks.
The ANP established checkpoints and conducted security patrols to ensure the safety of Sha Mashad, Sakhar, Pasaw, Dosang, Doanne and Yakhdan villagers in the Shaidi Hasas District.
Many families have returned to villages recently suspected of containing insurgent activity.
“We are happy that there are no Taliban present in our village,” said one recently returned resident. “We will do our part to help keep the insurgents out.”
The ANP patrols through the area have accomplished more than simply removing insurgents. The patrols have also given villagers a true sense of security and increased confidence in the Afghan government.
“Villagers are now showing their support for the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan instead of living in fear of the insurgents,” explained an ANP soldier.
ANP and Coalition soldiers have also met with village elders, who report that residents remain supportive of Afghan government’s efforts to maintain security.
“We are truly concerned for the Afghan citizens of this area,” an ANP soldier said. “This is our home, too.”
According Army Maj. Christopher Belcher, Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman, the ANSF have improved and developed their skills for basic patrolling, cordon and search, clearing operations and combined operations with the Afghan National Army.
“The Taliban are a destructive force that targets innocent Afghan citizens,” Belcher said. “The ANP are developing their capability and working with the local Afghans to cultivate relationships and ensure security is maintained throughout Oruzgan Province.”
